Faithful readers may remember that I live directly across from an empty lot straddling Calhoun and McMillan Streets in Clifton Heights. Last year people got the bright idea to park in the grass, ruining a potential green space for those of us without yards. It was a pretty lame situation, and I got a little fussy over the whole ordeal.
Well, almost a year later, the property owners have finally got the situation under control. They installed a permanent chain link fence around the existing gravel parking lot, which is quite an upgrade from caution tape and post and chains that were easily torn down by asshole Jeep drivers.

After:
And yesterday, I saw people hanging out under the single tree in the grass lot!! This is great news. If more people start using it as green space, there is potential for the developers to maybe someday use it as a park space.
This is your eternal optimist, signing off.
as much as I hope you're right, from what I remember, they finally have a development team signed on for the future mixed use project for that site
ReplyDeleteHonestly I think this area would be better suited developed at a fairly high density. The incorporation of plazas would be all the public space needed I think. Then have some rooftop amenities for those that live and work there like so many new developments often do.
ReplyDeleteThe reality is that the development is this site is going to be extremely expensive due the the necessity of parking for the dense development which will have to come in the form of an underground parking garage. And the fact of the matter is that the developers will not get a return on creating park space that will offset their high development costs. As a result, expect a full build out and enjoy that patchy grass and singular tree while you can.
The realities of development are near and forthcoming, I realize. However, that area is a path for high foot traffic, and it would be silly to build it completely out and ignore the neighborhood patterns.
ReplyDeleteThe good news is my lease is up in September. Onward and upward!
